Welcome to Kiwanis Alefest's Page
Kiwanis Alefest is the great Northern BC craft beer festival, held annually on the last weekend of January in Prince George. Beyond a showcase and celebration of craft beer, the goal of the annual event is to raise funds that benefit local children. Unfortunately due to COVID our fundraising efforts look a little bit different this year, instead of a large event we will be bringing a little bit of Alefest home to you. We have partnered with some amazing Northern BC craft breweries to bring you an exclusive 8 pack of craft beers.
Kiwanis Alefest has sponsored a room for Northern BC families to use in the Ronald McDonald House BC (RMH BC) since our festival began in 2015. By supporting us, you help to provide accommodation and support for sick kids and their families when they must travel to Vancouver for life-saving treatment.
RMH BC can serve 73 families each night and depends on generous community supporters like you.
In 2019, 82 families stayed from Prince George. 312 families stayed from other Northern communities including Vanderhoof and Smithers.
321 nights: the longest consecutive stay by a Prince George guest family last year
40% of our families stay with us twice or more each year. The most stays by a Prince George family in 2019 was 7 stays.
When you see siblings Pamela, Siphesihle, Musawenkosi and Nicholas zooming around the RMH BC sports court on bikes and scooters, it can be hard to believe the struggles they have already faced in their young lives. All 4 siblings originally from South Africa, have medical challenges from kidney failure to cerebral palsy. They travel from Prince George to Vancouver approximately every 2 to 3 months with their mom Shoshanna for appointments and treatments.
Staying at the Ronald McDonald House helps them all to cope. They can now break up long days of appointments by coming back to the House to eat lunch and play together on the sports court or in the games room. "Now my children don't mind the trips to the hospital" says Shoshanna. "These are the bright points that make the hard, not so hard".
Thank you to everyone who has generously contributed! Your support is especially impactful as families navigate these uncertain times, allowing them to find comfort and a sense of community at RMH BC.
